Diffuse Ly α haloes around Ly α emitters at z = 3 ⋆ : Do dark matter distributions determine the Ly α spatial extents ?
نویسنده
چکیده
Using stacks of Lyα images of 2128 Lyα emitters (LAEs) and 24 protocluster UVselected galaxies (LBGs) at z = 3.1, we examine the surface brightness profiles of Lyα haloes around high-z galaxies as a function of environment and UV luminosity. We find that the slopes of the Lyα radial profiles become flatter as the Mpc-scale LAE surface densities increase, but they are almost independent of the central UV luminosities. The characteristic exponential scale lengths of the Lyα haloes appear to be proportional to the square of the LAE surface densities (rLyα ∝ Σ 2 LAE). Including the diffuse, extended Lyα haloes, the rest-frame Lyα equivalent width of the LAEs in the densest regions approaches EW0 ∼ 200 Å, the maximum value expected for young (< 10 7 yr) galaxies. This suggests that Lyα photons formed via shock compression by gas outflows or cooling radiation by gravitational gas inflows may partly contribute to illuminate the Lyα haloes; however, most of their Lyα luminosity can be explained by photoionisation by ionising photons or scattering of Lyα photons produced in H ii regions in and around the central galaxies. Regardless of the source of Lyα photons, if the Lyα haloes trace the overall gaseous structure following the dark matter distributions, it is not surprising that the Lyα spatial extents depend more strongly on the surrounding Mpc-scale environment than on the activities of the central galaxies.

The expected abundance of Lyman - α emitting primeval galaxies . I
We present model calculations for the expected surface density of Ly-α emitting primeval galaxies (PGs) at high redshifts. We assume that elliptical galaxies and bulges of spiral galaxies (= spheroids) formed early in the universe and that the Ly-α emitting PGs are these spheroids during their first burst of star formation at high redshift. One of the main assumptions of the models is that the ...

متن کاملConstraints to the evolution of Ly - α bright galaxies between z = 3 and z = 6 ⋆
Galaxies at high redshift with a strong Ly-α emission line trace massive star formation in the absence of dust, and can therefore be regarded as a prime signature of the first major starburst in galaxies. We report results of the Ly-α search within the Calar Alto Deep Imaging Survey (CADIS). With imaging FabryPerot interferometer CADIS can detect emission lines in three waveband windows free of...
متن کاملDeep SAURON Spectral-Imaging of the diffuse Lyman-alpha halo LAB1 in SSA22
We have used the SAURON panoramic integral field spectrograph to study the structure of the Ly-α emission-line halo, LAB1, surrounding the sub-millimeter galaxy SMM J221726+0013. This emission-line halo was discovered during a narrow-band imaging survey of the z = 3.1 large-scale structure in the SSA22 region. Our observations trace the emission halo out to almost 100 kpc from the sub-millimete...
متن کاملLyman-alpha radiative transfer during the Epoch of Reionization: contribution to 21-cm signal fluctuations
During the epoch of reionization, Ly-α photons emitted by the first stars can couple the neutral hydrogen spin temperature to the kinetic gas temperature, providing the opportunity to observe the gas in emission or absorption in the 21-cm line. Given the bright foregrounds, it is of prime importance to determine precisely the fluctuations signature of the signal, to be able to extract it by its...
